When my college counselor asked what degree program I desired, my answer was to put me in "anything that included Illustrator and Photoshop". I ended up in the printing industry. Fortunately, it was an interesting study that also included Graphic Design, QuarkXpress, Microsoft Office, photography (including dark room process...ugh) and many others.

These were particularly helpful skills, though, for the product development, trade show and presentations commonly done in manufacturing. When I started at the turn of the century, the company I worked for was contracting out $20,000 per month for digital graphics and photography services. While I loved the folks we worked with over there, I took it as a personal failing whenever it was decided to utilize their services. Working to improve efficiency and speed, I'd worked that average down to $2,000 per month.

Over time and various project requirements, I worked to greatly improve these skills and capabilities, while also developing skills mentioned in other areas of this site. But one company I worked for found customers really responded to visual content. While I'd dabled in a couple video projects, including an interactive animated video series for an email campaign, I hadn't done much videography or production. After having a few successes there, though, I have followed that up more recently with a 3-D animated video, which I also got ranked nationally for their preferred keyword.
